How the mighty have fallen.
Jennifer Lopez was on cloud nine two years ago when she announced her engagement to Ben Affleck for the second time.
“Two very lucky people. Who got a second chance at true love,” the singer said then.
The couple got back together 20 years after they ended their initial engagement, and Affleck, 51, proposed to Lopez, 54, again in April 2022. They tied the knot several months later.
Now, Lopez and Affleck are at the center of split rumors that they have yet to deny.
Reports have claimed that the couple — who weren’t seen together for 47 days — are in therapy and Affleck has “come to his senses” about his “fever dream” marriage to Lopez. On May 20, she also attended the premiere of her film “Atlas” solo. Per People magazine, Affleck skipped the red carpet because he was on the set of his Los Angeles film “The Accountant 2” at the time.
The story of “Bennifer,” which may be coming to an end soon, was quite different at the time of their second engagement.
Lopez and Affleck were about a year into their reconciled romance, which started after Lopez broke things off with fiancé Alex Rodriguez, when they moved full steam ahead with a proposal.
The actress announced her second engagement to the “Argo” director on April 8, 2022, with a brief clip of her wearing a green diamond engagement ring.
Then, she teased a “major announcement” with a video on X (formerly known as Twitter). “So I have a really exciting and special story to share …” Lopez told her fans.
Her official engagement announcement was shared in her On the JLo newsletter four days later.
And in true J.Lo fashion, it was quite a dramatic reveal.
“Did you ever imagine your biggest dream could come true?” she began her lengthy message. “Saturday night while at my favorite place on earth (in the bubble bath), my beautiful love got on one knee and proposed.”
Lopez continued: “I was taken totally off guard and just looked in his eyes smiling and crying at the same time trying hard to get my head around the fact that after 20 years this was happening all over again, I was quite literally speechless and he said, ‘Is that a yes?’ I said, ‘YES, of course that’s a YES.’”
The “Dance Again” singer said she was “smiling so big and tears were coming down my face” when Affleck popped the magic question.
“It was nothing fancy at all,” she noted about the engagement, “but it was the most romantic thing I could’ve ever imagined … just a quiet Saturday night at home, two people promising to always be there for each other.
“Two very lucky people. Who got a second chance at true love,” Lopez said to conclude the announcement.
Lopez’s engagement ring, a green stone set in a silver band, had a special meaning to the superstar. She said in a previous newsletter that green is her “lucky color” and referenced her iconic green Versace dress that she wore to the 2000 Grammys.
Lopez and Affleck were so over the moon after their engagement that they got married just three months later. The pair exchanged vows in July 2022 in Las Vegas, and Lopez confirmed the marriage in another newsletter.
She called the Vegas nuptials “the best possible wedding we could have imagined.”
They later staged a more elaborate ceremony the following month at Affleck’s 87-acre property in Georgia.
Their family and friends were there, including Affleck’s and Jennifer Garner’s kids — Violet, 18, Seraphina, 15, and Samuel, 12 — and Lopez’s and Marc Anthony’s twins, Max and Emme, 16.
Lopez and Affleck were riding high in their marriage leading up to the release of her album “This Is Me … Now,” the companion film “This Is Me … Now: A Love Story” and the documentary “The Greatest Love Story Never Told,” which were all released in February 2024 and highlighted the Bronx-born diva’s relationship with Affleck.
In an interview with Billboard to promote her album, Lopez said her and Affleck’s romance taught her that “true love does exist, and some things are forever.”
She also told her fans: “Don’t give up hope.”
However, three months later, Bennifer is seemingly headed toward a split.
